NABIFILMEX in Cinema Rehiyon 8

Dasmariñas, Cavite – Four films from Nabunturan Independent Film Exhibition (NABIFILMEX) made it to the Cinema Rehiyon 8 held in Dasmariñas, Cavite last November 28 – December 2, 2016 with the theme, Creating Cinema Communities, Celebrating Cultural Legacies.

Cinema Rehiyon is a non-competition film festival, which showcases the harvest of award-winning independent films from the different regions in the country.

It was presented by NCCA (National Commission for Culture and the Arts), Film Development Council of the Philippines, University of the Philippines-Los Baños Foundation Inc., and UPLB Pelikulab in cooperation with De La Salle University-Dasmariñas, which played host to this year on behalf of the entire province of Cavite and the rest of Region IV.

This year’s festival ran the longest in the history of Cinema Rehiyon; 100 featured films were screened in different time schedules and venues according to theme.

Selected films from NABIFILMEX were “Muted” by Atty. Heraclio T. Malaki III; “Tami-aw” by Mary Ann Gabisan, which recently bagged the Best Film in NABIFILMEX 4; “Supot” by Jelford Teves; and a student film “Sim 2” by Janine Villa.

Filmmakers also had the chance to talk about the making of their films and answer questions in a forum after each screening.

These filmmakers are graduates of Sine Indie Workshops, a pre-NABIFILMEX filmmaking workshop organized by the Municipal Tourism Council of Nabunturan, Inc. (MTCNI).

NABIFILMEX is the only open-air film festival in Mindanao held every September, which showcases local and international films. As one of the official festivals in the municipality of Nabunturan, it became one of the tools to promote tourism.

The hosting of the 9th Cinema Rehiyon was also officially turned over to Nabunturan during the closing program last December 2.

Moreover, NABIFILMEX festival director Atty. Karen Santiago-Malaki and organizing committee also went to Cinema Rehiyon 8 in Cavite to benchmark for the hosting of Cinema Rehiyon in 2017. Marga Melendres/TIS Nabunturan
