Local Chief Executive Mayor Chelita C. Amatong convened the Anti-Smoking Task Force (ASTF), headed by Vice Mayor Rodel Balili, last February 1, 2017 at the ABC Hall for an orientation and planning on the Anti-Smoking campaign program of Nabunturan to come up with an activity plan in preparation for the Anti-Smoking program launching on April 3, 2017.

According to the Anti-Smoking Action Officer Dr. Danielo O. Rubillos, the program has to be implemented in order to attain a smoke-free municipality and thus the harmful effects of tobacco to the health of the people of Nabunturan is presented.

The said orientation activity was successfully conducted by the Local Government Unit of Nabunturan, in cooperation with the Civil Service Commission, MLGOO, PNP, Provincial Health Office (PHO), and the Municipality of Monkayo.

Resource Speakers, Nurse Allen Vermot and Abegail Antonio from PHO, tackled the health risks of smoking cigarettes and the DOH guidelines on the implementation of smoking ban in public places.

Jecel Acedo, anti-smoking program action officer from LGU Monkayo, was also invited to share her experience on the successful implementation of anti-smoking ordinance in their locality.

Red Orchid Award, the Department of Health (DOH) highest recognition for 100% Tobacco-Free Environment Provinces, Municipalities, Cities, Government Offices, Government Hospitals and DOH Centers for Health Development, parameters and templates to follow was also discussed during the orientation.

Dr. Rubillos also added that the main thrust of the campaign is smoking cessation to be able to address the alarming increase of lifestyle-related diseases such as cancer and diabetes.

The final output of the orientation and planning workshop is the action plan of the initial activities that the LGU would undertake in preparation for the implementation of the Municipal Anti-Smoking ordinance in April 2017 as well as the tasking of document requirements for the search for Red Orchid Awardee next year.
