In pursuing a competitive and a more emboldened community, and with the initiative of Ms. Juvy Jade Javonitalla, together with the Municipal Council of Women, Gender and Development Focal person, and the local government unit of Nabunturan, the very first Women’s Summit was conducted with the theme: “Changing our World by Empowering Women…” in the Municipal Hall Covered Court of Nabunturan on July 21, 2018.
The event started with a sidesplitting and engaging lecture on Gender and Development. And a number of participants filled the Municipal Gymnasium with a thirst for knowledge and excitement for the stored activities.
Ms. Alma Delia C. Besana, the Gender and Development Focal person, enlightened the members on the importance of gender and development; its objectives and the premises that guides the roles and responsibilities of every member; the difference between gender and sex; and the true purpose of life.
She then emphasized that, “Nagsukad ang empowerment sa atua, aron mulambo kita sa sulod ug sa gawas” (Empowerment starts within us to be able to flourish inside-out). And concluded that the women of Nabunturan should know their rights and teach themselves when to say no, or to say yes; for if there is equality between men and women, progress and development is at hand.
After the GAD orientation, the event proper was graced by honorable Mayor, Chelita C. Amatong, SB Members’ Hon. Darwin C. Tan, Hon. Francis P. Secuya, Hon. Jeovy G. Mandin, Hon. Cheryl A. Trinidad, Hon. Romeo B. Clarin, Jr., Board Members’ Hon. Christine Caballero and Hon. Vivencia Secuya who represented Gov. Jayvee Tyron Uy, Provincial Women Coordinator Ma’am Zenith Maceda of the Women Development Council, Hon. Debie G. Tan who represented Cong. Ruwel Peter S. Gonzaga, and Ma’am Sally Matunhay of the PNP.
Respectable women leaders also shared some noteworthy messages during the summit. Mayor Amatong delivered an encouraging message to all the participants saying that the LGU-Nabunturan will do everything in its’ power for the success of convening the event (women summit), due to the dire need in spreading and disseminating the message that empowerment is not a fight between sexes, rather an endeavor of promoting equality, equity, and empowerment among men and women.
While SB member Cheryl Trinidad challenged everyone on what they can contribute to stop the detrimental issues of Early Teen pregnancy, rape, and abortion which is currently escalating in the society.
On one hand, Hon. Christine Caballero stressed on the needs of women in today’s society, which is the appreciation from the community, and being recognized as part of its growth and development. And upon achieving that, those women can assert that they have evolved into a more progressive society that is equal and empowered. She also reminded the women to love themselves first, to be able to love and cater for the people around them.
One of the highlights of the second part of the Women’s summit is the presence of Provincial Chairperson, Ms. Sholai S. Lim of the Provincial Women Development Council and Board Member Nena Atamosa who joined the affair.
Entertaining Modern Dance Competition also thrilled and invigorated the participants, guests, and staff of the summit. Contestants from Barangay Poblacion championed the event, while participants from barangay Mainit bagged 1st runner-up, followed by barangay Manat as 2nd runner-up and New Sibonga as 3rd runner-up.
Most of the participants went home smiling as they received cash prizes, merchandise and appliances during the raffle draw from generous and kind-hearted sponsors who graced the event.
